The Friends
of the
Diocese of
Barrackpore
The diocese of Barrackpore is part of the Church
of North India, in the region of West Bengal, the
diocese surrounding, but not including, the city of
Calcutta.
Barrackpore, where the Cathedral Church of St.
Barthlomew is based, is an industrial town in the
great Calcutta connurbation, about 20 miles north
of Calcutta itself. However, most of the diocese is
rural, most people living in rural villages to the
North of Barrackpore, or to the south in an area
called the Sunderbunds - poor agricultural land of
the Ganges Delta.
The Diocese of Barrackpore consists of about
105 churches split into 25 Pastorates, under the
oversight of Bishop Brogan Malakar. The
Diocese also has a number of schools, training
colleges and development agancies supporting
the work of the pastorates (the equivalent to
parishes).
The Friends of the Diocese of Barrackpore
supports the work of the diocese in number of
ways:
We provide a limited amount of finance towards
the day to day running of the diocese.
We support specific projects within the diocese.
This has included building a parsonage/education
centre in Kumrakhali, providing suitable transport
for clergy etc.
We sponsor clergy through their training.
Recently, we have provided considerable
assistance to those affected by the devastating
West Bengal floods, when over 1200 people were
killed.
The Friends of the Diocese
of Barrackpore provide a
prayer letter and other
information regularly to
members. We have also
recently produced the group
bible study booklet
"Mission Matters", price
£1.30, inc P&P.
